The navajo sandstone in the Pine Valley Mountains represent the far western edge of the Colorado Plateau. It is unique as National Forest land and in many states or countries an area like this could receive National Park status. The mountain range is regarded as the largest laccolith in the world and the ecosystem is host to many uncommon species and geologic features.
